Berlin Is Commemorating 25 Years Since the Fall of the Berlin Wall with 8,000 Luminous Balloons Nov 03, 2014

This November sees the 25 year anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall, the dividing line between the capitalism of the West and socialism of the East post World War II. To commemorate the anniversary, the city is installing 8,000 luminous balloons along 15km of the wall's former route which encircled the western half of the city.

The installation, called Lichtgrenze or "Border of Light" was designed by interaction specialistsWhitevoid, alongside film studio Bauderfilm. Viewing towers, information points and guided tours will feature at key locations, including Mauerpark, the Berlin Wall Memorial at Bernauer Strasse, and East Side Gallery. Alongside these, large screens will display film collages that document the wall's 25 year history.

The balloons will be illuminated on November 7, and will be released into the air on November 9, the date the East German Government announced that people could cross the border freely into the West.

Check out some more images below, and head down to watch the balloons release if you're in Berlin on November 9.
